Here's some advice should we encounter (please Old Man Winter leave us be!) what we did earlier this year or should the temps drop below freezing. I, for one, am keeping my fingers crossed that we don't have to deal with that again!
If you still have your pool operational, make sure you run the water through the filtration system while we are under the threat of freezing temperatures. As the outside temps fall below freezing, and your pool is not winterized, make sure to run your system as long as the temps are below 32 degrees. Should you have an equipment failure or power outage that prevents you from running your system, make sure to turn the breakers off and remove all the winterizing plugs from your equipment to keep it from freezing and bursting. Every pump has a plug in the basket chamber that should be removed – including the automatic cleaner’s booster pump. The filter tank will either have a plug or a cap that needs to be removed to let the water drain out. And if you have a chlorinator, salt cell, or heater remove any plugs on them. Lastly, protect your skimmer against freeze by stuffing an empty – but with the top secured – ½ gallon milk jug or 2-liter soda bottle into the skimmer and put the skimmer lid back on. You want something collapsible that will absorb the expansion of water into ice to keep the plastic skimmer body from cracking.
