Ahh, April in Texas… bluebonnets and wildflowers are putting on a show, the temperatures are warming up, and the pollen is in full attack mode (seriously—achoos all around). If you’re not sneezing, are you even experiencing spring?

Summer is just around the corner, and we’re already dreaming of lazy days spent poolside with a cold drink in hand. With Pool Opening Day coming up, it’s officially time to start getting things swim-ready and soaking up that sunshine.

March Is Here — Let’s Celebrate!

Happy March, y’all! To kick off the month with a little Irish wisdom: “Never iron a four-leaf clover, because you don’t want to press your luck!” ��

March is packed with celebrations, traditions, and plenty of reasons to have a little fun. From honoring Texas pride and adjusting the clocks, to celebrating luck, fresh starts, and the arrival of spring, there’s something for everyone this month. It’s also a time to recognize meaningful moments like Earth Hour, Palm Sunday, and National Vietnam War Veterans Day.

And let’s not forget the quirky and lighthearted observances that keep things interesting! This month gives us plenty of opportunities to celebrate everything from anthems and hugs to Barbie, tools in the garage, planting flowers, goofing off, making up your own holiday, appreciating those stubborn weeds before you pull them, and even breaking out a fresh box of crayons.

Food lovers, you’re in for a treat, too. March serves up a delicious lineup of reasons to indulge — peanut butter, cheese doodles, cereal, meatballs, potato chips, corned beef and cabbage, sloppy joes, cheesecake, Black Forest cake, and even clams on the half shell. It’s basically a month-long excuse to snack happily and often!

Protecting Your Pool During Freezing Temps

Brrr! It looks like a cold snap is headed our way this weekend, with temperatures dipping well below freezing. If you’re wondering how this could affect your pool—or what steps to take to protect it—we’ve put together some helpful freeze-prep information below.

PROTECTING YOUR POOL DURING A FREEZE

QUICK NOTES:

*If your system is automated with controls, freeze mode will automatically kick in and stay in place as long as the temps are at 32 degrees or lower.

*If you have time clock trippers you will need to remove both the ON and OFF trippers so that the equipment will continuously run.

**FOR MORE INFORMATION:

If you still have your pool operational, make sure you run the water through the filtration system while we are under the threat of freezing temperatures. As the outside temps fall below freezing, and your pool is not winterized, make sure to run your system as long as the temps are below 32 degrees.

Should you have an equipment failure or power outage that prevents you from running your system, make sure to turn the breakers off and remove all the winterizing plugs from your equipment to keep it from freezing and bursting.

Every pump has a plug in the basket chamber that should be removed – including the automatic cleaner’s booster pump. The filter tank will either have a plug or a cap that needs to be removed to let the water drain out. And if you have a chlorinator, salt cell, or heater remove any plugs on them.

Lastly, protect your skimmer against freeze by stuffing an empty – but with the top secured – ½ gallon milk jug or 2-liter soda bottle into the skimmer and put the skimmer lid back on. You want something collapsible that will absorb the expansion of water into ice to keep the plastic skimmer body from cracking.

Water test time! Is your pool’s water ready to make a splash? Let’s make sure it’s all balanced and swim-ready!
Basket check! Have you checked your skimmer, pump baskets, and pool sweep bags for any cracks, rips, or tears? Trust us, they’ll thank you later.

We made it through Hurricane Beryl! She may have been a Category 1, but she sure did pack a heck of a punch!

Happy August, everyone! We hope that you have an excellent month and get the kiddos back off to school without much ado!

Welcome September and a Happy Labor Day, everyone! Now that the kiddies are back in school, and the weather may be beginning to cool down (please, oh, please!) a little it's time to get ready for fall (already!).

Please keep in mind that we will be closed on Labor Day and will resume our regular hours on Tuesday, September 3rd.

Our office and retail store are currently experiencing a power outage. Office staff are working remotely with limited communication capabilities, including no access to email.

The Sweetwater Pool & Patio family would like to take a moment to tell you that we are happy that you and your families made it safely through Hurricane Beryl.

Our office staff is working remotely with limited communication capabilities. Crews are backlogged, not only clearing hurricane debris, but also 1 day behind having missed Monday service due to Beryl. All cleaning and repair technicians are out working. Please be patient as your technician will eventually service your pool. In the meantime, please remove as much foliage out of the pool as possible. Your technician will not be able to clear out large debris from the pool, but will clear out small debris and service the pool as he is able. Even if you are still without power it is important that your technician has access in order to shock, clean out small debris and assess for any possible damage.

We are monitoring our text messaging service (832-780-5955) and are able to receive phone calls (713-665-4441) through our phone app. At this time we are unable to access our email.

Happy Birthday, America! America looks great to be turning 248! This year definitely isn't creeping by! Before we know it, summer will be shuttered for the season. We certainly hope that all you good folks are enjoying an epic year no matter what "epic" may mean to you.

Don't forget to peruse this month's newsletter. We've featured information about smoking hot trends in pool tile, pool umbrellas, safety tips for the 4th, things to check out in the Houston area (should you want to get out and about and pry yourself away from your pool for a bit) and some tasty 4th of July recipes to make that cookout legendary! Summer is upon us! Okay, so it doesn't officially start until June 20th but we're already heating up here in the Houston area and we know a lot of you are already beginning to get a bit of relief and taking advantage of your swimming pool.

Take a gander at this month's newsletter (you'll find the link at the bottom of the page). This issue has gone to the critters! We've featured and article about keeping birds out of your pool, a doggo gone wild and pool safety tips for the pups! Happy Easter and April, Y'all! These months are just flying by! Now if all this pollen will just fly on outta here and leave us be! We know that having a pool and dealing with pollen is not a pleasant mixture! The positive is that we have officially reached spring and both warmer weather and swim season is right around the corner!

In this month's newsletter we've included articles about pool chemical safety, a pool built around a special automobile, some places to celebrate the eclipse on the 8th in Houston, things to check out this month in the Houston area and some recipes for the spring.

We're open our regular hours on Good Friday from 9 AM until 6 PM and we will also be open on Saturday from 9 AM until 5 PM should you need anything or just want to get that water tested!

What? March already? Geez! Leprechauns, fun with pollen (although, we are not going to complain about trees blooming and longer days!), Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo and swim season is right around the corner! We're sure that a lot of you are ready to shake off those winter blues and embrace warmer weather!

Just as a reminder, we've officially changed our retail store hours for the spring and summer. Beginning on March 1st we will be open weekdays from 9 AM until 6 PM and on Saturday from 9 AM until 5 PM. Spring and summer hours will remain effective through the end of September.

We're here for you and all of your pool needs! Visit our retail store (but mind our mess as we are in a bit of transition) to get your water tested and check out our line of Poolife products. Or bring in your pool sweep for a checkup. Need a filter clean? Have a leaky pump? Booster pump noisy? Automation acting up? Call us at 713-665-4441 to schedule a visit from one of our service techs. We also do leak detection and even renovations!

PROTECTING YOUR SWIMMING POOL WHEN THE TEMPS DROP

Here are some tips to help protect your swimming pool should the mercury drop below freezing:

QUICK NOTES:
*If your system is automated with controls, freeze mode will automatically kick in and stay in place as long as the temps are at 32 degrees or lower.
*If you have time clock trippers you will need to remove both the ON and OFF trippers so that the equipment will continuously run.

**For more information:
If you still have your pool operational, make sure you run the water through the filtration system while we are under the threat of freezing temperatures. As the outside temps fall below freezing, and your pool is not winterized, make sure to run your system as long as the temps are below 32 degrees.

Should you have an equipment failure or power outage that prevents you from running your system, make sure to turn the breakers off and remove all the winterizing plugs from your equipment to keep it from freezing and bursting.

Every pump has a plug in the basket chamber that should be removed – including the automatic cleaner’s booster pump. The filter tank will either have a plug or a cap that needs to be removed to let the water drain out. And if you have a chlorinator, salt cell, or heater remove any plugs on them.

Lastly, protect your skimmer against freeze by stuffing an empty – but with the top secured – ½ gallon milk jug or 2-liter soda bottle into the skimmer and put the skimmer lid back on. You want something collapsible that will absorb the expansion of water into ice to keep the plastic skimmer body from cracking.

Hello all! This year is truly coming to a close! Holidays are literally around the corner, and we'll soon be changing our calendars to read 2024. Yikes!

Since we're in the "thick" of the fall season, be sure to remember to:
*Keep your skimmer baskets free of debris.
*Check the bag of your Polaris, or pool sweep, and empty any debris and/or leaves.
*If you have a pool heater, and haven't checked it already, fire it up to be sure it's in proper working order. Give us a shout at 713-665-4441 if it isn't and we can schedule a service technician to come out and take a look.

Lastly, be sure to click on the link and check out this month's newsletter. We've thrown a few articles and tidbits in there for you.

Rainwater is acidic and involves the chemicals in the pool’s water. Rainwater can also change the pH balance and alkalinity level. Acidic rain can also make water corrosive, which can affect plaster and ceramic over time.

Here are some other factors on how rain may affect your swimming pool:

Rainwater causes pH levels to rise and TA levels to fall due to chemical dilution.
Chlorine is less active, so it will not kill the microorganisms and keep the water clean.
Rain can bring algae spores and other debris (like dust) that can submerge into the water which can make it murky and, if not treated quickly, the sun’s rays can accelerate algae growth.
The appearance of algae, mold and mildew on the tiles is another situation. Rain can also disperse algae, which will give the water a green color. When rainwater falls into the pool, the water’s pH and chlorine alter and can cause the appearance of fungi and bacteria in the pool.
Rainwater is usually a different temperature than the pool, contrasting the temperature between the rainwater and the water in the pool, which alters the pool’s normal temperature levels.
Overflow is another situation that is possible if rainfall is continuous. In a heavy rain the water level can rise considerably and, eventually, overflow.

Rainfall Pool Maintenance
Some recommendations on how to treat your pool before and after it rains are as follows:

Install an automatic or manual pool cover. A pool cover helps protect the pool’s water from being contaminated by rainwater.
Drain the water until levels are normal. This only needs to be done if the pool water overflows from continuous heavy rain.
Rain brings debris, so remove it from the pool, including leaves and insects. Use an automatic vacuum to clean the pool’s sides and bottom, preventing dirt from retaining any organisms and fungi growth.
Check skimmers for any debris and clean thoroughly.
Turn on the filter system to avoid algae growth. This will help circulate the water and prevent the development and growth of algae spores. We recommend running the filter pump for at least 12 hours daily during the summer months.
Test the pool’s water. It may need to be adjusted to normalize pH and chlorine levels.

Get spooked in the coolest way by hosting the young or young at heart at your backyard pool. Halloween decorations are a must and, with the natural night light, let your ghostly imagination take over. Create your own unique costume themes (bathing suits included) and refreshments to brew up a magical party that guests will be screaming about!
